Position Highlights

The Research Technician II in Dr. Halpern's laboratory in the department of Pediatrics will perform laboratory tasks including sorting and cataloging biological samples, record keeping, conducting experimental assays to quantify bile acid levels, and handling of and procedures on mice and rats in the study of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis. The candidate should be a team player, and motivated to learn the relevant literature and techniques related to the research.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, design, coordinate, and execute research experiments using basic bench research techniques in the development of new strategies, techniques, and equipment along with their peers. Sort and catalogue human biological specimens.
  • Perform a variety of procedures following specific protocols including research sample collection and specimen preparation.
  • Sort and catalog human biological specimens.
  • Record results, analyze data, and make observations.
  • Perform experimental assays, including data entry into Excel.
  • Prepare technical reporting, summaries, and quantitative results.
  • Maintain logs, records, notes, and spreadsheets to facilitate data analysis.
  • Participate in animal studies including hand-feeding neonatal mice or rats.
  • Set up varied research experiments and tests according to detailed protocols by becoming familiar with assigned studies, applicable background research, laboratory protocols, and procedures.
  • Conduct basic lab maintenance including preparation of stock reagents, autoclaving, dish washing, etc.
  • Coordinate lab supplies.
  • Participate in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, cleaning, and repairing of scientific apparatuses, equipment, and instruments specific to assignment. Provide basic instruction to others on the use of this equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow written protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a research laboratory preferred.
  • Experience in general laboratory techniques including pipetting and making solutions.
  • Previous experience with rodent handling preferred.
