Overview

Responsible for assisting the Chief Legal Officer with the overall management of legal and regulatory issues with a special emphasis on labor and employment matters, while providing guidance and direction to senior management and key business stakeholders that reflects sound judgment, strategic vision, and substantive legal knowledge and expertise. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, responsible for managing legal risks and providing guidance concerning employees. Additionally, oversee various business, legal, and compliance projects crucial to the organization's strategic objectives.

Responsibilities
    Provides guidance to senior management and key business stakeholders on a range of labor and employment issues, encompassing regulatory compliance, business development, strategic opportunities, human resources (HR), contractual matters, and other pertinent legal or business initiatives.
    • Monitor legal developments on federal, state, and local laws applicable to labor and employment issues and help ensure the Company's policies and practices are consistent with such laws
    • Regularly update HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws
    • Serve as a resource and advise the HR and legal departments on labor and employment issues
    • Facilitate internal investigations in partnership with the Deputy General Counsel, with an emphasis on employee complaints or conduct
    • Coordinate and partner with outside counsel, as required, on significant legal matters with strategic impact to the business
    • Establish and maintain excellent communication and positive relationships with stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes concerning legal matters
  • Provide legal advice on a variety of legal, regulatory, and compliance matters with significant impact to the business, with an emphasis on applicable federal, state, and local labor and employment laws.
    • Support and advise key business stakeholders on strategic initiatives, including merger and acquisition, business development, and government relations efforts
    • Conduct legal review of HR policies and procedures, provides regulatory and compliance guidance to HR, legal, and other internal clients on employee issues to ensure compliance with applicable federal state, local, and accreditor requirements.
    • Advise on complaints and requests for information from federal and state agencies, as well as division accreditor(s)
    • Manage and oversee responses to subpoenas and other requests for information
    • Perform case management and assists in responses to requests relating to litigation and government investigations including assist in working with insurers
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Education / Experience

  • Juris Doctor required
  • California employment law and litigation experience required
  • Minimum of seven years' experience in a government, regulatory, corporate legal department or law firm environment required
  • Experience with ADA, ADEA, COBRA, ERISA, FLSA, FMLA, GINA, NLRA, OSHA, Title VII, USERRA, and WARN (required)
  • Experience working directly with/for internal business partners and executive management
  • Experience working in legal department for public company (preferred)
  • Subject-matter expertise in regulatory requirements relating to proprietary post-secondary educational institutions (preferred)
  • Experience working with large organizations operating in multiple jurisdictions across the United States (preferred)

Work Environment

  • Work is performed indoors in a climate-controlled environment when on site at assigned company location. Employees must be able to safely ambulate when on company premises.
  • Remote worksites are available; Employees must meet minimum technical standards for eligibility and participation.
  • Occasional travel (up to 20%)
  • Salary range $165,000/yr - $180,000/yr depending on experience
