Job Description:

The Child Life Supervisor provides leadership and direct day-to-day supervision of staff. This position works in conjunction with departmental leadership in providing program leadership, consultation, program development, education, clinical supervision, and oversight to daily department activities for Child Life Services.

Posting Specifics
  • Entry Rate: Based on Experience

  • Shift Details: Day Shifts (Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm) to best support the caregivers in the department at the facility. Supervisors may assist with holiday coverage as needed.

  • Department: Child Life at Primary Children's Miller Campus in Lehi, UT

  • Additional Details: Must be a certified Child Life Specialist with active certification.

Job Essentials

  • Participates in the implementation and execution of Intermountain and Child Life vision, direction, and continuous improvement process. Assists in establishing accountabilities for job performance and evaluation.
  • Provides effective leadership. Coordinates between all positions within Child Life and with other professionals to facilitate the achievement of system and department goals and objectives.
  • Participates in selection, supervision, training of employees, practicum students, and volunteers.
  • Supervises staff performance through coaching, goal setting, annual evaluations, and corrective action in consultation with the manager. Orients, trains, and mentors new employees via established guidelines and under the direction of the manager.
  • Builds on strengths and opportunities for the team creating and supporting an environment that fosters teamwork, respect, and diversity.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and collaborates with manager(s) to develop an action plan to improve patient outcomes. Supports evidence-based practice by leading and supporting system improvements and measuring outcomes with concise metrics.
  • Ensures services meet professional standards and regulatory requirements (e.g. Joint Commission, CMS, ACLP).
  • Represents and provides the child life perspective on hospital and system-wide committees.
  • Facilitates department committees or taskforces as assigned.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for other child life staff.
  • May assist with managing operating budget for area of responsibility.

As a Child Life Specialist:

  • Accurately assesses, prioritizes, and documents pediatric patient and family care.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates effective pediatric patient and family centered health care plans.
  • Provides developmentally-appropriate education, psychological procedural preparation, coping support, comfort management, and play opportunities to pediatric patients and families.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.
  • Child Life Certification from Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP).
  • Four years (8,000 hours) of clinical child life experience.
  • Computer experience in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases or similar applications.
  • Experience in Child Life Core Competencies which include but are not limited to: 1) Establishing supportive relationships 2) Meeting needs of child and family members with a focus on social, emotional, and cognitive development 3) Providing education to and communicating with children, families and team members 4) Providing coping support and comfort management 5) Guiding children in therapeutic play techniques 6) Ongoing assessment and written documentation of clinical care 7) Mentoring, supervision, and coaching staff and students 8) Providing bereavement and end of life support.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervision of a minimum of two Child Life Interns
  • Previous mentoring and leadership experience
  • Fluency in one or more languages in addition to English.
  • Advanced level proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Requirements:

  • Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
