Job Description

Summary:

Under the general supervision
of the Lead EEG Technologist performs a wide variety of Neurodiagnostic
studies to include EEGs and evoked potentials in the EEG Laboratory the
Emergency Department and on the inpatient units. Performs all essential functions with
consideration of the age-specific needs of the geriatric adult and adolescent
patient. Fosters patient and family
centered care and healthcare services in accordance with the Lifespan and The
Miriam Hospital*s mission vision and values with consideration of the life
span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

Responsibilities:

Measures and accurately applies electrodes according to
the International 10-20 electrode systems.
Ensures that electrode impedance meet laboratory standards.





Writes a comprehensive patient history gathering
appropriate information from patient patient*s record and family members to
include seizure types date of last seizure other neurological symptomatology
and medications. Explains test procedure
to patient and family members present.




Performs EEG tracing (routine sleep portable and
Electro-cerebral silence recordings) and evoked potential tests in all three
modalities according to the standards of the Laboratory.





Performs special procedure EEGs such as
nasopharyngeal minisphenoidal and special temporal electrode recordings as
well as daytime nap studies.





Performs evoked potential tests implementing
alternative methods such as variations of stimulus parameters in certain
situations outside of the normative range to better define any abnormalities.





Performs advanced Neurodiagnostic EEG procedures





Performs trouble shooting and equipment maintenance
of EEG and evoked response systems.



Assists in establishing and maintaining department
procedures and protocols. Works with the
Lead Technologist and Department Neurologist to initiate new procedures for
Neurodiagnostic testing.





Assists in the training and education of junior and
standby relief staff.





Participates in conferences and technical meetings
when possible.





Takes charge of record storage and disposal of old
records. Performs routine supply
inventory.





In the absence of the Lead EEG Technologist assumes
scheduling and technical responsibilities for the function of the laboratory.





Maintains quality assurance safety environmental
and infection control in accordance with established hospital department
policies procedures and objectives.





Performs other related duties
as required. Fosters patient and family centered care in accordance with the Lifespan mission vision and values and
the philosophy of nursing at The Miriam Hospital and with consideration of the
life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.



Other information:

BASIC
KNOWLEDGE:





Graduate
of an Electroneurodiagnostic Technology Program accredited by the Committee on
Allied Health Education and Accreditation or equivalent formal training. Registered by the American Board of
Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET) preferred.





EXPERIENCE:





One year experience in Electroneurodiagnostic testing preferred.





WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:





Walks and stands
intermittently throughout the day.
Subject to electrical and energy hazards. Works with medical equipment and has direct
patient contact. Sufficient visual
acuity and manual dexterity to use computer keyboard and other common office
equipment. Any potential hazards are
minimized or nullified by adherence to established safety procedures and
precautions including use of safety and protective equipment/clothing. May lift and position patients and lift/push
heavy supplies and equipment.
